The Taylors

Nestled in the mountains of Colorado, the Taylors spend their days with baby Warren and their wolf dog, Koda. On a late fall morning, I photographed Via and Brayton inside their lovely home — warm light, grounded textures, a wood-burning fireplace, crisp air coming in through the window, the sound of the freight train passing by (I am romanticizing this as there was recently a petition in the neighborhood to limit the times of the trains due to noise).

One of my favorite moments was Warren fast asleep in the nursing chair, beanie on, with Koda by his side— protective, calm, and quite literally ten times his size. Just minutes earlier, there were a lot of tears. We paused, we soothed, and just when it felt like the shoot might be over, mom and dad came to the rescue with a rattle and soothing sounds. Within seconds, Warren was asleep again, perfectly settled into the oversized rocker.

When photographing babies, expect the unpredictable. The rules are: trust the process, and let them have their experience — when we comfort them in the ways that they need, we allow them to show up in the divine way that they are.

This shoot was very special to my heart as Via and Brayton are friends of mine. Normally, Via is cooking up a gourmet meal for me and welcoming me into her home as a dinner party host - to capture this chapter for them was much better than any meal I would have made in return!
